How to Negotiate a Job Offer Salary
posted by: Gretchen
One of the factors that you need to consider before accepting a job offer is salary or compensation. Don’t just accept any offer without considering the offered salary. It should be commensurate to your degree, ability, and experience in a particular position.
What would you do if you got hired for the position that you’ve always wanted but with a low pay? Would you negotiate or decline the offer? If you choose to negotiate, how would you do it?
Below are Some Ways to Negotiate Salary after a Job Offer:
- Be a professional. If you act professionally during your job interview, there’s a big chance that you will be offered a good compensation package.
- Research on the given salary for the said position. You need it as a basis when you do your negotiation. Don’t negotiate if you are clueless.
- Gather some information about the prospective employer. How much do they give to the said position? It’s important that you know this.
- Assess your needs and priorities, as well as the needs of your employer. Consider your cost of living and the income of your family. Know the standing of the company. If it has just started it may not meet you demands.
- It’s safer not to tell your current salary but if you are asked, you have to be honest.
- Be sure to show that you are worth the salary you are asking for. Demonstrate your value.
- Don’t bring up the salary issue before the employer or interviewer does. Wait for the employer to tell you the company offer.
- Don’t give exact figures but use a bracket which starts a bit lower than what the lower has offered but ends a little higher than what has been offered.
- Don’t be very demanding or overconfident as you might lose a good job. Just be modest and polite.
- It’s better to demand for bonuses as other forms of earnings or wages. Don’t just focus on your salary.
- If you want a raise, look for a sample letter asking for a salary increase.
Negotiating about your salary is quite difficult but you just need to do it. Once everything about salary is settled, then the next thing that will be done is signing of job contract.
