Do you feel shortness of breath with simple everyday activities like walking up and down stairs and walking? How about chest pain? Watch out! You might be experiencing the signs of primary pulmonary hypertension.

Before we go deeper, let’s try to understand the definition of pulmonary hypertension first. It is a condition of the lung in which there is high blood pressure in the blood vessels that transport blood from the heart to the lungs. The high pressure occurs because the vessels become narrowed making it hard for the blood to flow through them. Due to the abnormal pressure, the right side of the heart is affected. It actually expands in size. This will make this part of the heart weaker thus affecting its function to pump enough blood to the lungs.

Signs of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension

Signs of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension:

Below are the common signs of primary and secondary pulmonary hypertensions:

  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness/Passing out
  • Fainting
  • Bluish lips and skin
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling in the abdomen, legs, or ankles
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Racing pulse
  • Breathing difficulty even when at rest

Treatment

There are various types of medications to treat pulmonary artery hypertension. They re listed below:

  • Oxygen
  • Calcium Channel Blocking drugs
  • Anticoagulants
  • Digoxin
  • Diuretics
  • Bosentan
  • Sildenafil
  • Lifestyle changes (healthy diet, enough rest, exercise)

In addition to the treatments and medications, people who suffer from this should quit or never start smoking, avoid pregnancy and birth control pills, as well as high altitudes. The prognosis is that those who have this pulmonary hypertension can survive if they help themselves with medication and prevention.

On the other hand infants also suffer from this. Pulmonary hypertension of the newborn is due to the failure of the pulmonary vascular resistance to decrease after birth. This is too dangerous as it may result to death.

This may also develop during your elementary, secondary, or even junior years. Stress and pressure also trigger this condition just like  the recently concluded election.

If you happen to experience some symptoms, you’d better pay a visit to your doctor. Healthy living is still one of the best things to do to avoid health problems like this.
