Signs of Lactose Intolerance in BabiesLactase is a sugar found in cow’s milk, cheese, and other dairy products.  It is an essential enzyme needed to digest lactose.  However, when one’s body is not able to produce sufficient lactase, it can lead to a condition known as lactose intolerance.  The problem is not really alarming though, but being lactose intolerant can bring about extreme discomfort on the patient.  The condition is thought to appear in children, toddlers, grade-schooler, and adolescent years, but symptoms may also manifest in your infant especially if the newborn is premature.  So, how do you know that your baby is lactose intolerant?  Well, here are some signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance in babies.

  • Excessive gas in babies
  • Colicky
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Crying constantly
  • Loose stools
  • Diarrhea manifested by runny, dark stools
  • Inability to sleep than normal
  • Eczema

Those are some of the signs of lactose intolerance in babies.  If you suspect that your little one may be suffering from the said condition, a visit to your doctor to rule it out as it may be an underlying condition such as celiac disease or irritable bowel syndrome. There is no way on how to cure or treat the condition though as production of enzyme is something that can’t be controlled. Instead, treatment is focused on alleviating signs and symptoms such as following lactose – free diet which limits your intake of dairy products.  You can opt for other food sources which will give your body supply of calcium such as tofu, broccoli, spinach, almonds, etc.  Finally, there are also products available in the market like Lactaid which promises to let you enjoy dairy products with the absence of unpleasant signs and symptoms.  Good luck!
