How to Treat Whooping Cough at Home

Whooping cough or medically known as pertussis is a respiratory disorder caused by Bordetella pertussis bacterium. The term whooping cough is derived from the “whooping” sound it makes when the person breathes in after severe coughing spells. This condition has becoming widespread mostly in infants younger than 6 months old along with kids ages 11-18 years old. However, through DPT vaccination administration to children, this condition can be greatly reduced.
Signs and Symptoms of Whooping Cough
Initially, the first symptoms of whooping cough resemble a cold including:
- Low-grade fever
- Mild cough
- Runny nose
- Sneezing
However, the mild cough turns into coughing spells after a week or two. During the coughing spells, the child may actually turn purple and may mimic an action as if they’re gasping for air. In adults, milder symptoms may be experienced such as prolonged cough without the whoop.

How to Treat Whooping Cough at Home
- Isolate the person and avoid contact with the sick person.
- Observe proper hand washing technique after handling soiled materials that the sick person has used.
- Consume plenty of fluids such as citrus juices, soups, and water. Eat a lot of fruits.
- Diet should be small frequent meals to reduce vomiting.
- Limit intake of sugary products and other milk-based food sources that can trigger cough even more.
- To loosen secretion, you can boil water and inhale its steam.
Home Remedies for Whooping Cough
- Garlic – extract the juice from the garlic and let the sick person ingest atleast 1-2 teaspoons twice daily.
- You can also boil 1 teaspoon of Fenugreek seeds, a small amount of honey, 1 cup of water, and 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger and drink the mixture.
- Another whooping cough cure is the through a mixture of almond oil and ginger oil which will be drank three times daily.
- Mix one teaspoon of fresh radish juice and a dash of honey. Add some rock salt on the mixture and let the patient drink it every 8 hours.
Those are the measures that you can take on how to treat whooping cough at home. Once you notice that the cough is getting even worse, and then you need to prompt medical advice as soon as possible because it might lead to complications including pneumonia, bronchitis, and other lung disorders.
