Swelling in feet (Peripheral Edema) or on the lower part of your body may bring discomfort in any activities that we want to do especially when you have to wear your shoes. It’s not a disease nor painful. It is a condition wherein your foot, legs, knee, toes and ankles are swollen. Peripheral Edema is due to standing for so long, overweight, long rides of travel, menstrual periods, injury, sodium retention and occurs during pregnancy.
If you can’t prevent this condition to happen, then atleast you should know how to reduce the swelling in feet to avoid too much discomforts.
How You Can Reduce Swelling in Feet
Here’s how:
- Drink water. Atleast 8 glasses of water a day will help you flush out the toxins or sodium stored in your body.
- Decrease your salty food intake. Salty food may contribute to sodium retention on your body thus it will cause some of the body parts to swell. Reducing this will be a great help especially during pregnancy.
- Exercise. In every health topic we always read this. Exercise can help you improve your body systems’ circulation.
- Have a body massage. Massage is a very good way to relax as well as to promote circulation especially on your hands and feet. It can circulate away some excess fluids stored in that area.
- Wear socks or stockings. Socks and stocking can support this part and can help decrease swelling.
- Don’t stand or sit for too long. When you are traveling, move your feet in a circular motion to avoid swelling.
- Elevate your legs. When lying, try to place your legs piled pillows. Your legs should be higher than your head.
- Lose weight. If you are overweight then you should atleast lose some weight.
If swelling is getting bigger in inches then you should seek doctor’s help. The swelling could be addressed right away to avoid complex discomforts in the long run.
