If you have been wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses for so long and suddenly felt tired of using them, then may be you’d like to consider Lasik eye surgery. This surgery is actually one of the newest procedures for vision correction with the absence of pain post-procedure. Though a lot of people call it “lasix”, the correct term is actually Lasik which is short for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.

Lasik surgery works for people who are suffering from nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. But before you get tangled up with this procedure, get a clear picture first of what you can expect and how lasik eye surgery is done.

Before the Procedure

If you’re considering undergoing Lasik Eye Surgery, the first thing that you need to do is to consult an eye doctor. Your doctor will then tell you whether you are a good candidate for the surgery. Remember not all of us can undergo LASIK. There are exceptions including – age, patients with diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma, lupus, etc.

Also, through a routine eye exam, the ophthalmologist will find out if your eyes are healthy enough for the surgery as well as how much laser ablation you need to correct your vision.

During the Procedure

This course is an outpatient surgical procedure and will only take 10-15 minutes for each eye. A local anesthetic will be dropped on your eyes to numb them.

During the procedure, a trained eye surgeon will use a special instrument called a microkeratome.  This device is made and will be used to cut or create a thin and circular flap in the eyeball (cornea).  The eye surgeon will fold the hinged flap out of the way. With the use of an excimer laser, some corneal tissue will be removed and the laser reshapes very tiny bits of corneal tissue. The flap will be repositioned onto the underlying cornea with no stitches made.

After the Procedure

Once the surgical treatment is finished, healing after Lasik eye surgery is quite fast. For most people, their vision improves immediately. However, for others it may take them more over a couple of days or even weeks.  Also, post-surgical operation you should keep in mind that:

• Most likely, your vision will be blurry within the day of surgery, but it will improve in the following days.
• A mild burning sensation may be felt, but never rub your eyes. Ask prescription from your doctor to ease discomfort.
• Consult your doctor immediately if any unusual side effects are experienced.
• Limit activities which include bending your head down to prevent pressure and activities including swimming and driving.
