What are Allergies ?
These are abnormal reactions to harmless substances. These substances are called allergens. They may be swallowed, inhaled, or come contact with the skin. The most common allergens include food, pollens, plants, viruses, bacteria, latex rubber, house dust mites, mold spores, insect bites or sting, cat, medications and environmental conditions. Some allergies are seasonal which occur only during a certain season.
Allergy Symptoms (Mild to Moderate)
- Rash
- Sneezing
- Congestion
- Itchy and watery eyes
- Itchiness
- Difficulty breathing
Treatment
- Decongestants: These can be done orally or by sprat to unclog nasal passages. Spray decongestants include phynylephrine (Vicks Sinex) and oxymetazoline (Afrin). Oral decongestants include Sudafed and combinations of decongestants and analgesics.
- Antihistamines: These are drugs that block the action of histamine that is responsible for allergic symptoms. Consult a pediatrician before giving these to your kids or babies because they may affect learning. These drugs include Benadry and Claritin. Other medications that require a prescription include Allegra and Zyrtec. Bear in mind that the major side effect of antihistamines is drowsiness. So if you have to remain alert do not take these medicines. It can also increase anxiety, nausea, loss of libido, fatigue, depression, gastritis, and difficulty with urination.
- Cromoglycate or related agents: These are administered mostly as nasal sprays or eyedrops to help prevent attacks.
When you feel strange symptoms, it’s better to consult your doctor for further examination. You may need to get allergy shots or any other medications that could give you relief.
