Have you experienced urinating whenever you sneeze or you cough?  It’s embarrassing right?   That is common to everyone especially adult people. That is what we call as urinary incontinence in medical term.   It is one of the common problems of adults or women.   It could be characterize as frequent urination and overactive bladder. It could bring embarrassment or disappointment to the person who has it.   This is due to a problem in the muscles and nerves that are responsible for holding or releasing the urine or due to weakened pelvic muscle.   Another cause of this is due to infection like urinary tract infection (UTI) or urinary retention.  In this article we will talk about how to treat urinary incontinence.

Urinary Incontinence Has Five Types :

• Stress incontinence: It is considered as the most common type. It happens when you cough, sneeze or whatever you do that could give pressure to the bladder.
• Urge incontinence: Person leaks urine when the bladder is too active.
• Overflow incontinence: it’s the most disgusting type wherein you feel like your bladder is never empty.
• Mixed incontinence: It happens when stress and urge combined together.
• Functional incontinence: It happens when a person with normal toilet usage cannot use the bathroom or there is no bedpan available.

How to Treat Urinary Incontinence ?

You can choose from varied treatments to help you get rid of urinary incontinence. It may include conservative approaches to more complex approaches.

• Behavioral techniques. It changes on the lifestyle of the person. Under behavioral techniques you can try bladder training that includes double voiding (urinating and trying again after few minutes) – it can exercise your bladder to be emptied and can cure overflow incontinence.
• Physical therapy. The techniques include kegels. It is a training to stop your urine flow by contracting the muscle in urethra.
• Medications. Under medication you can try the following:
  • Anticholinergics
  • Topical estrogen
  • Imipramine
• Medical devices. Patients could use urethral inserts. It is like a tampon inserted in a urethra to lessen the leakage.
• Interventional Therapy. Usually they are non surgical treatment that you can try to avoid urinary incontinence.
  • Radiofrequency therapy. It uses radiofrequency energy to apply heat on the lower urinary tract. It can make the urethra firm.
  • Botulinum toxin type A( Botox).
• Surgery. If the above mentioned treatment didn’t work then it’s about time that you try surgery. You can try the following procedures like artificial urinary sphincter,sling procedures, and bladder neck suspension.
